Barbara Stafford featured speaker at October meeting

The next meeting will be on Wednesday, October 5 at the Luther Burbank Art & Garden Center, 2050 Yulupa Ave., Santa Rosa. Spinner and rug weaver Barbara Stafford of Napa will be the guest speaker.

Barbara grew up in southern England but has lived most of her life in California.  She learned to weave during the 6 years she lived on a farm in southern Indiana, where she learned about sheep, wool and the joys of spinning and weaving.

She works with a wide variety of wools including sheep, goats, camels, llamas and what she calls “hairy beasts” such as musk ox and buffalo.  Barbara’s focus is on the animals’ fiber, which she prepares and spins by hand in order to keep that natural, rich character.  Her beautiful rugs are simple in design and accentuated by the lively color from natural dyes she uses and her lovely finishing details. Barbara’s rugs have appeared in juried exhibits, won awards, and have been featured in national spinning and weaving magazines.

At the meeting Barbara will give a slide presentation on the evolution of her work and will bring some of her current projects, which include small rugs and beautiful lightweight scarves.
