An Adventure in Printing

The Joy of Printing-Joy Stocksdale that is.

Joy is a local artist living and working in Sebastopol.  She graduated from California College of Arts and Crafts and followed that with more studies at Goldsmith’s College, University of London in 1978-9 where she conceived of and developed Polychromatic Screen Printing.

While in London Joy was introduced to a screen printing process that produced a multicolored monoprint with no color registration. On her return home, she developed a system where it is possible to print four to six prints from one prepared screen.  Polychromatic Screen Printing was born.

Joy has practiced and honed this technique since 1979 and has also published books that describe and define what she does. Her latest, Polychromatic Screen Printing Expanded and Revised, has recently come out and is available through Amazon.

This book is a compendium of how to do this type of printing.  There are very detailed lists of what you will need as well as how to build the screens and information on where to buy materials.  The book also serves as a retrospective gallery of Joy’s work with multiple color photos of her work as well as a selection of other people’s work using this technique.  Joy gives directions for printing on fabric and printing on paper and she even highlights the important parts of each section so, if you use this book as a manual, you will be able to find the important information more easily.
