Santa Cruz Handweavers Guild September Meeting

The Santa Cruz Handweavers Guild offers members the opportunity to share common interests by participating in study groups focused on different aspects of weaving. One of these study groups, the Rug Study Group, meets regularly. Its members, Janette Gross, Janet Pollack, Laura Rider, Martha Stanley and Joan Vierra, will share their experiences at the September meeting.

The annual CNCH Liaison Luncheon and Meeting is coming up: Saturday, Sept. 18. And your reservations are due before Sept. 8.

The luncheon is being held at J & D’s Steakhouse, 36 Main St., Sutter Creek, CA. This liaison meeting will include the presentation of information and materials about the 2011 Sutter Creek CNCH conference.

All guild presidents and liaisons are specifically invited to attend, but all CNCH members are welcome. Be sure your guild is represented.

Diablo Weavers meets once a month, Sept. – Nov. and Jan. – May on the third Friday of the month at the Thurman G. Casey Library, 2661 Oak Grove Rd. Walnut Creek, 10 AM. We encourage new members interested in weaving to join, or any interested guests at any of our meetings. Please check the newsletter each month to insure that we are indeed meeting at the library. The fall edition of CNCHnet, the e-Journal quarterly from CNCH, is online as of August 1. You will find reports on fun filled guild related summer activities, profiles of doyennes our fiber community, and ideas for using your artistic skills to help celebrate the upcoming Holidays. Our contributors have worked hard to make their articles interesting and, in most cases, added pictures to help our imaginations.

Welcome back from summer vacation, or from working all summer, whichever. Monday, September 20, 2010, the Tamalpais Weavers’ Guild is honored to have Staphanie T Hoppe as our first speaker for the 2010-2011 season. The meeting takes place in the Francis Young Gallery, Marin Art and Garden Center, 30 Sir Francis Drake Blvd, Ross, CA, and starts at 7 pm. Guests encouraged, bring friends. ANCIENT TECHNIQUES, CONTEMPORARY DESIGN

More than 1,200 years ago, the people of the American Southwest perfected the vertical loom and weaving techniques I use today. The finished selvages on all four sides of each piece allow me to pack the weft yarn tightly so the rug will withstand hard wear on the floor.

I dye the wool yarns I use for weft with modern washfast, lightfast “acid” dyes (the acid to fix the dye is ordinary household vinegar). These dyes give me a wide range of rich colors with minimal environmental impacts.

Traditional Lao Textile Lecture and Workshops

The Silverado Guild is sponsoring a presentation and trunk show with Kongthong Nanthanvongdouangsy in Napa on Thursday July 8th, and workshops on Tuesday and Wednesday July 6th and 7th.

Kongthong is a master weaver who together with her sister owns of the Phaeng Mai Gallery in Vientiane. Kongthong will describe the history and background of the traditional textiles of Laos and the cultural meaning of the cloth. She will also describe the role of the Phaeng Mai Gallery in efforts to keep alive the weaving skills and cultural traditions of her region. Join us to learn more about the place weaving holds in the culture of Laos and the rich symbolism of the designs.

Workshop for Weavers: Tuesday July 6 and/or Wednesday July 7

Kongthong Nanthanvongdouangsy will hold two days of workshops on Traditional Lao Weaving Techniques. This will be an informal gathering of up to 10 weavers. There will be some flexibility in format and subject matter but will include a presentation describing the traditional Lao weave structures with an emphasis on the supplemental technique followed by hands-on weave design and practice. Necessary supplies and equipment will be provided. Workshops will be in Barbara Stafford’s back yard and studio using the Harrisville rug loom rigged to carry the Lao loom assembly.

You will not need to bring any supplies but a notebook and camera might be useful.

Tuesday July 6 and/or Wednesday July 7

Time: 10 a.m. – 4 pm or???

Location: 1520 Seminary Street, Napa

Lunch: bring, eat out or take out at local restaurants – several within walking distance.

Fee: $30/day.

If you are clearly a “spring” and have definitively ”autumn” yarn in your stash, then you must make time to come to the May 17th Tamalpais Weavers’ Guild meeting. It is our annual swap meet. It’s time to check your stash and cull the fibers that no longer inspire you. Perhaps they will be just the perfect yarn for someone else’s project. Make room on your shelves for some special fibers. Do you have extra weaving, spinning or dyeing supplies that could use a new home? Buy two of something and just never got around to returning the duplicate? Embarrassing true confessions!

Santa Cruz Handweavers Guild May Meeting

Thom Atkins, known to the fiber arts community for his bead-embellished quilts, will describe how he got “from bronze to beads” at the May 12th meeting of the Santa Cruz Handweavers Guild. Over the course of his career in art, Thom has worked in several media (bronze, beads, stained glass to name but a few). Since 2002, his focus has been on beads and fabric, integrating these elements into unified compositions — his bead-embellished quilts.

Thom has been a participating artist in Santa Cruz County Open Studios and has exhibited his work at the Santa Cruz County Building, the Santa Cruz Art League, the Olive Hyde Gallery and quilt expositions, including the Pacific International Quilt Festival. He has taught varied aspects of working with beads and textiles at Cabrillo College, quilting and sewing guilds and seminars at Asilomar.
