Volunteers & Angels

Want to immerse yourself further? How about signing up for a volunteer shift? Many hands make light work and there are lots of tasks where you can help plus get the chance to meet people from other guilds or even get to know someone from your own guild better! Check out the volunteer sign-up page through the website or contact Simone Mortan to find out where you fit best.

Still not wet enough? Sign up to be a Class Angel where you can fight the demon hordes (actually, assist the instructor with collecting material fees, taking roll and various other small tasks). Check the Angel box on your registration or contact Simone Mortan to sign up.

Registration

We will need a few people to help out with registration on Thursday afternoon and Friday morning. Our registrar will have everything organized, you will just need to help pass out the registration packets to people as they arrive. Time commitment: 1 hour shifts; Thursday 4:00-5:00 and 5:00-6:00 and Friday morning from 7:30-8:30

Class Angel

For most classes the Angel just needs to be there to collect any materials fees and check people in. The instructor may ask you to help with some preparation/layout of the room, equipment or materials. Being a class angel does not interfere with your enjoyment of the class. You are there to provide a little support for the instructor. Time commitment: Be at the class a bit early and help out during the class.

Kris Abshire, Serendipity in a Cup we would like to have 2 angels and she has requested that they arrive at the class 1 hour early on the first day and ½ hour early for the 2nd and 3rd day.

Mary Finley, The Wonders of Natural Dyeing we also want 2 angels who can help drive participants to the workshop which will be located about a mile from the Asilomar grounds in a private home where we can use the kitchen.

Instructor Transport

Many instructors will be arriving by air at the San Jose Mineta International airport or the San Francisco International airport. If you’re driving from one of these areas would you consider picking up an instructor and bringing them to Monterey with you? Most instructors will have a couple of suitcases with their materials and supplies so you need to have room in your car for them and for their baggage. They will also need a ride back to the airport at the end of the conference. This is a great opportunity to have some one on one chat time with an instructor for the conference. Even if you haven’t chosen their workshop what a great opportunity to get to know some of the best fiber artists in the country! Time commitment: Arrive at airport to pick-up instructor. You will need to park and meet them at baggage claim when their flight is due and then drive to Asilomar. Also driving them back to the airport in time to make their flight home.

Fashion Show Wranglers

Our fashion show will be VERY informal for this off year. Anyone can participate and show off something they have made. We would like to have a couple of volunteers to help loosely organize the participants so that they can get the attention they deserve as they show off their work. Time commitment: approximately 1 hour 7:00-8:00 p.m. on Thursday.

Personal Project Gathering Hostess

We are planning to have informal lunchtime gatherings where participants can bring along a personal project and just gather to share ideas and friendship. We would like to have someone act as a “hostess” for each of these events. No big responsibilities for this one…just help folks get introduced around and feel welcome! Time commitment: Since this is happening during the lunch hour we would like 2 volunteers for each day for 45 minutes each. One person from 11:45-12:30 one person from 12:30-1:15. This will allow you to get your delicious lunch in the dining hall.

Social Meet-ups

From 4:30-6:00 each afternoon we will have a social meet-up. This will be in the area where the scholarship raffle is held and non-wearable work will be displayed. We need a couple volunteers for each afternoon who will keep an eye on the displayed items and the raffle items. Time commitment: 1.5 hours to enjoy the exhibits and welcome others to the gallery area.
