Siobhan Harlakenden: Weave Like A Viking

Siobhan Harlakenden

My fibre journey started with a spindle and distaff and progressed to exploring all I could do with the yarn and wool that was accumulating. Marrying my interest in historical domestic life and desire for nature centred sustainability, it brings me great joy to share heritage crafts with current generations.

Weave Like A Viking

Learn the history and technique of a Viking Age pile woven cloth through weaving a stylish shawl! The Varafeldur mimics the look of a sheepskin but is flexible, breathable, and leaves the sheep happily munching in the pasture. Historically used as cloaks and blankets, the technique is applicable to all sorts of items including home decor, other personal adornments, and the best pet beds ever! Along with learning the weaving process students will also learn how to work with and prepare a double coated fleece.

Expertise: Students must have basic weaving experience including being able to prepare a simple warp but this is overall a very beginner friendly project. Students must also be comfortable working with raw wool.

Material Fees: $50 for Icelandic fleeces

Supply List: Students must bring their own loom pre-warped as specified, a rigid heddle or multi-shaft loom are both acceptable but must have a minimum of 15″ weaving width, yarn for weft, two shuttles, and a tapestry comb or other implement for packing down. Suggested items but not required include tapestry needle, basket or other vessel for organizing locks, and single row wool combs.

Wool warp 1.5 yards long and 15″ wide must be prepared on the loom before class. Students may choose to do plain weave or 2/2 twill and a DPI between 8-12.
