15hr Class

Painted Warps and Parallel Threading

This workshop takes you on a weaving journey through painting two warps and dressing your loom to weaving parallel-threaded designs (Echo) and beyond, with the steps as follows:

You will arrive at the workshop with two warps scoured (basically washed in hot water and then dried in preparation for dyeing) and wound. The first day, we will soak our warps in dye activator (20 minutes or so), paint them, and hang them up to dry and cure overnight. The second day we will rinse them, dry them with a hair dryer, and begin to dress our looms. (The process of dressing the loom and winding on is an important takeaway of the workshop.) The third (1/2) day we begin the process of dressing our looms and, if there’s time, begin weaving. The aim is to broaden and deepen your understanding of Echo and Jin (and, if you choose, parallel-threaded double weave), hand-painting warps, and color interaction.

If the group chooses, we may have a follow-up session on Zoom several months later, where weavers can show the class their results.

Experience Level: Students must know how to dress a loom and read a draft. For 4 shafts and up. Table looms are preferable.

Materials Fee: $25 for full-color, detailed handouts and a supplementary selection of weft yarns.
