Remembering Sandra Rude

Weaver, teacher, artist and concert cellist Sandra Rude was well known and respected throughout the textile world.  Sandra was in high demand as a teacher and exhibitor.  The textile world mourns the loss of this creative woman, taken too soon.

Sandra received her early training from the Handweavers Studio in London.  In a career spanning several decades, Sandra won awards for her work in a number of highly respected juried venues such as Complex Weavers, Handweavers Guild of America, Convergence and the Smithsonian.

Mike Rude, Sandra’s husband, has announced the Sandra Rude Memorial Scholarship through Complex Weavers.  Funds will be raised through the sale of Sandra’s weaving equipment and woven products.  You can also donate to the scholarship directly with CW.

From colleague Barbara Shapiro:  She was an amazing weaver with a creative approach and a precise mathematical mind. Her creativity extended to using the chip waste from her husband wood working to dye her complex woven silk scarves. I admired her a lot and was sorry when she moved away from the Bay Area.

And from fellow weaver Ulla de Larios:  I met Sandra in 2000 in connection with CNCH. We spent many hours together driving to meetings chatting about weaving, mainly intersecting double woven twill shawls.  A skilled technical writer, Sandra was charged with rewriting the CNCH bylaws.
