The effects of climate change are palpable, woven into our daily lives across seasons and borders. Weather extremes, the consequent loss of habitat, and stress on species, including humans, are increasing at an extraordinary rate. In this first-time collaboration, members of Tapestry Weavers West (TWW) and Tapestry Weavers in New England (TWiNE) present IMPACT: Climate Change, a juried exhibition of contemporary tapestry focusing on this important theme.

The exhibition features tapestries that reflect the artists’ concerns about our changing global environment and the ominous consequences of climate change. They are woven in a variety of tapestry techniques and styles. But whether traditional or experimental, abstract or representational, they echo an anxiety inherent in this topic. Of the 81 tapestries submitted for the show, 32 works by 28 artist/weavers were selected for this special bicoastal exhibition by curators Kerri Hurtado of Artsource Consulting and Deborah Corsini and Alex Friedman, both Tapestry Weavers West artists.

The exhibition will be on view at the Belmont Gallery of Art, 3rd floor, Homer Building, 19 Moore St., Belmont Center, Massachusetts from September 8 to October 13, 2019. A public reception will be held Sunday, September 15, 2019 from 1 – 3 pm.

Impact: Climate Change will travel to a second venue and open at the Mills Building, 220 Montgomery St., San Francisco, California from December 16, 2019 to March 13, 2020. A public reception will be held Thursday, January 30, 2020 from 5:30 – 7:30 pm.  Both venues are public buildings and open weekdays, 9 am – 5 pm.

An exhibition catalog will be available to purchase through the TWW website at www.tapestryweaverswest.org.

Tapestry Weavers West is a regional group of tapestry weavers founded in 1985. It is currently a group of about 65 active weavers based in the SF Bay Area, California and also includes members spanning the West Coast from British Columbia, Canada to San Diego and several states beyond.

Tapestry Weavers in New England, founded in 1991, has nearly 60 members from all six New England states as well as a few from further afield. Both of these groups were founded to create an educational as well as an exhibition opportunity for their members. Members from both groups exhibit nationally and internationally, teach, and are enthusiastic advocates for contemporary tapestry weaving.
